Dol Goldur

Friends, as you can imagine...my soul is rejoicing in The Hobbit actually being in production. But today I had even more reason to be overjoyed in that I learned the White Council and Dol Goldur will be featured in the movie.

You see, people lose sight of the significance of The Hobbit and Bilbo's story and the whole novel. Long before Gandalf discovered that The Ring of Power had returned to Middle-Earth, there was a growing fear amongst the elves and wizards that Sauron was once again returning to power. In the novel The Hobbit, it is mainly referred to when Gandalf leaves the company of the dwarves and Bilbo so that he can go deal with the "Necromancer". Before returning to Mordor, Sauron began building influence in Dol Goldur, near Mirkwood. Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and others assembled to deal with this growing threat. The forces of Sauron had already started searching out the Ring since it was lost near there. Saruman had also started believing that the Ring was somewhere near there. Little did they know the creature Gollum had it. Meanwhile, Gandalf was helping Thorin and the dwarves destroy Smaug to prevent Smaug joining forces with Sauron.

Dol Goldur is eventually defeated in the War of the Ring by Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel single handedly breaks open the gates of Dol Goldur, Celeborn leads the elves in destroying the fortress. Once defeated, Galadriel plants the Elanor flower there...the elanor flower is a yellow flower that grew in Lorien and was the name of Sam's daughter you see him holding at the end of Return of the King. It's going to be cool if we get to see Galadriel involved in a throw-down, since as one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle-Earth, she is bound to kick some trash.

Anyways, Dol Goldur, the Necromancer, and the White Council will be featured in The Hobbit movie and that makes me happy.
